Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(New Britain, CT) - The Portland Sea Dogs got off of the bus on Monday night, and their bats were certainly ready. The Sea Dogs put four runs on the board in the first inning, and that proved to be plenty, as Portland defeated the New Britain Rock Cats 8-2 in the first of three games at New Britain Stadium.

Ryan Kalish and Nate Spears started the rally with a couple of singles. Luis Exposito drove in Kalish with a sacrifice fly, before consecutive RBI doubles by Yamaico Navarro and Ray Chang. Jose Iglesias kept the strong inning going, knocking in Chang with a single to right.

Casey Kelly made his Double-A debut for the Sea Dogs, going two innings, allowing three hits, one unearned run, and one walk, while striking out two. The one run came when Joe Benson walked to begin the bottom of the second, moved to second on an error, and scored two plays later on a wild pitch.

Portland got that run back in the top of the fourth. Jose Iglesias reached on an error by third baseman Juan Portes, and quickly made his way around on a Jason Place run-scoring triple.

Eammon Portice took over for Kelly in the bottom of the third, and provided four innings of solid relief. Portice's only blemish came in the bottom of the sixth, when Chris Parmalee homered to right. For his efforts, the Sea Dogs' right-hander earned his first win in Double-A.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Portland offense went to work again. Luis Exposito drove in a run with a single up the middle, and Ray Chang punctuated the rally with a two-run double to left-center field.

Andrew Dobies and Bryce Cox finished the game out of the Sea Dogs' bullpen, combining for three scoreless innings.

The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats resume their three-game series on Tuesday night at 6:35. Felix Doubront (1-0) takes the mound for Portland, going up against New Britain's David Bromberg (0-0).
