April 12, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Reading, PA---Calix Crabbe went two-for-four with an RBI, but the Fisher Cats could not overcome an early 4-0 deficit, losing 4-3 Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading.
The Phillies (4-1) batted around in the bottom of the third inning to secure the early lead. Freddy Galvis had an RBI single, Dominic Brown (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) plated two runs with a double and Kevin Mahar had an RBI single as the Phillies scored four off New Hampshire starter and loser Bobby Bell (0-1).
Bell worked five innings in his Eastern League debut, allowing five hits, walking two and striking out five batters.
The Fisher Cats (3-1) answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Darin Mastroianni beat out an infield single and stole second. He scored on a single by Crabbe. After singles by David Cooper and Brad Emaus loaded the bases, Eric Thames grounded to first, as Cooper scored to make it 4-2. Adam Calderone then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Cooper to bring New Hampshire to within 4-3.
Reading starter Drew Naylor (1-0) earned the win. He worked six innings, retiring the Fisher Cats in order in the five frames they did not score.
In the top of the ninth inning, Crabbe led off with a broken bat single against reliever Michael Schwimer, who then retired Cooper and Emaus. Southpaw Sergio Escalona was summoned out of the pen, and allowed a single by Eric Thames. But pinch-hitter Manny Mayorson grounded out to end the contest.
For New Hampshire, relievers Zach Dials and Bubbie Buzachero combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
The Fisher Cats continue the roadtrip tomorrow evening in Reading. LHP Luis Perez (0-0, 0.00) starts for New Hampshire. The Phillies will counter with RHP Vance Worley (0-1, 8.31). Game time is 6:35pm and radio coverage begins at 6:15pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
