Curve Capitalizes On Walks In Victory Over Squirrels

Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - A solid start by Justin Wilson and the ability of the Curve offense to take advantage of eight walks by Richmond pitching was all it would take to secure a, 4-1, win over the Flying Squirrels in their first-ever visit to Blair County Ballpark.
Wilson (1-0), who was making his Double-A debut, struck out four and walked just one while scattering five hits in his five innings. Tony Watson threw three scoreless innings of relief and Jeff Sues earned his first save of the 2010 season with a perfect ninth inning.
Altoona would break onto the scoreboard first in the first when Hector Gimenez capitalized on the two walks earlier in the inning by starter Craig Clark (0-1). With two away, Gimenez singled into center to score Chase d'Arnaud and Jordy Mercer. After one, it was 2-0 Curve.
When Richmond cut the lead in half by scoring a run on an infield hit by Connor Gillaspie in the top of the fourth, Altoona answered back with a run of its own. With Miles Durham at third after a successful sacrifice bunt by Gimenez, Josh Harrison drove him in to help the Curve reclaim the two-run lead.
Another walk by Squirrels pitching in the fifth helped the Curve score its fourth run of the game. It was yet again another two-out hit this time coming off the bat of Mercer, who singled in Jim Negrych to make it, 4-1.
All-in-all, three of the four runs Altoona scored reached base via the free pass. This season, Altoona has scored 12 of its 20 total runs with two away.
The Curve (4-1), winners of four of its first five, will try to secure a series win on Tuesday when they once again take on Richmond (1-4) at 6:30 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. Opening Day starter Mike Crotta (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will take the ball for Altoona while RHP Mike MacDonald (0-0, 2.25 ERA) takes the hill for Richmond.
It's a Two-for-Tuesday at BCB presented by Atlantic Broadband and KRAFT. Fans can receive two-for-one offers on tickets, hot dogs and small popcorn courtesy of Atlantic Broadband and KRAFT.
