Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that forward Ryan Cruthers has been named the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for December 21 through December 27, 2009. Cruthers, a second year pro from Farmingdale, New York, picked up a pair of assists in Reading's 6-3 loss in Elmira on Saturday, December 26; and then tied a career high by factoring in all four goals (1g-3a) in Sunday's 4-3 overtime win against the Trenton Devils.

Cruthers, who is currently riding four game point (1g-7a) and assist (7a) streaks, is the third Royal-and second consecutive-to win the weekly award this season. Stefano Giliati received the award in the first week of the season (10/23 - 11/01/09), and Ben Gordon was bestowed with the honor last week (12/14 - 12/21/09). This marks the first time team history that members of the Royals' organization have won the ECHL Player of the Week Award in successive weeks. Cruthers, who has registered at least one point in nineteen of his last twenty-two games with the Royals (7g-24a31pts), is the tenth member of the Reading organization to win the award, joining (in addition to Giliati and Gordon-twice) Brendan Brooks, Brian McCullough, Ryan Kinasewich, Mike Pandolfo, Shay Stephenson, Greg Hogeboom, and Chris Blight.

On behalf of Ryan Cruthers, a case of pucks will be donated to a Reading-area youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning it's sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 23,100 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.

The Royals are back in action tonight (Wednesday, December 30, 2009 @ 7:05pm) when the Wheeling Nailers visit the Sovereign Center for the first time this year. Reading will 'turn back the clock' and wear throw-back 'Boston Bruins-themed' jerseys circa 1972. The Royals game night radio broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show at 6:35 pm.
