Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
West Valley City, UT - In a Wednesday night contest the Victoria Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies met in the first of a two-game in two-night series at the E Center in West Valley City, Utah. Victoria's David Shantz got the nod in net while Utah started Parker Van Buskirk.
The Grizzlies hit the scoreboard first 7:42 into the opening frame when Lance Galbraith fed the puck from behind the net to a waiting Jake Gannon in the slot. The Grizzlies forward wired a quick wrist-shot that beat Shantz into the top corner of the net for his second goal of the year. The Salmon Kings answered back on the power play at 9:44 when Wes Goldie charged the left side of the net and put the puck off of Van Buskirk, the rebound slid to the right side of the net to a waiting Olivier Latendresse. The Kings' forward tapped the puck in for his 11th goal of the year. The teams would skate into the first intermission square at 1-1.
Utah would regain their one-goal advantage on the power play 11:29 into the middle period. Tim Crowder controlled the puck in the right faceoff circle and slid the puck towards the net as he lost an edge and fell to the ice. The puck would bounce in front of Shantz and was found by Tony Romano who put his first goal of the season past the netminder. The Salmon Kings knotted the score at 2-2 just 59 seconds later when a streaking Randall Gelech took a feed from Chad Painchaud into the slot and snapped his seventh goal of the season past Van Buskirk. Victoria took their first lead of the game on the power play at 18:18 when Olivier Filion worked behind the net and fed the puck out front of the crease to Goldie. The Salmon Kings' captain received the pass on the backhand and roofed the puck past the Grizzlies' goaltender for his 17th tally of the season, giving the road team a 3-2 edge into the third period.
Ryan Kinasewich evened the score at 3-3 just 2:34 into the third period when he received a hard cross-crease pass from Lance Galbraith and banked his league-leading 21st goal of the season into an open cage. Dirk Southern pulled the Salmon Kings ahead at 9:12 when he tipped a Jimmy Sharrow point shot that deflected off of Van Buskirk's glove and back into the net. Kinasewich netted his second goal of the period at 12:40 to tie the game at 4-4. The Grizzlies' captain took the puck off a faceoff win and put a shot on Shantz that was denied, but Kinasewich controlled his own rebound and put the rubber up and over the Salmon Kings goaltender. Goldie continued the flurry of scoring in the third period at 14:47. Olivier Latendresse made a pass to Goldie who found himself alone in front of Van Buskirk and made a move around the goaltender to put the puck into the net. Goldie's second goal of the game and 18th of the season rounded out the scoring for the game. Salmon Kings 5 Grizzlies 4.
Victoria finished 2/2100.0% on the powerplay while Utah was 1/333.3%. The Grizzlies outshot the Salmon Kings 34-30.
The Salmon Kings and Grizzlies finish their mini two-game set tomorrow night at 5:05 p.m. PST. Victoria will then travel north for a three-game series in Alaska versus the Aces (January 2nd, 3rd, and 4th). The Salmon Kings return home to play host to the Idaho Steelheads for a two-game set on January 8th and 9th. Puck drop for both games is 7:05.
