SUGARLAND, Texas - The San Antonio Rampage fought to the end
going six rounds in the shootout before falling to the Aeros 3-2 at Sugarland Ice
and Sports Center Saturday night.Houston jumped on the board first about six minutes into the opening period when Duncan Milroy redirected a shot from Maxim Noreau at the blue line. Peter Zingoni was credited with the second assist on Houston's power play goal.
About eight minutes later former Rampage defenseman Ryan Lannon, who was designated as the Aeros Captain, pushed Shawn Weller into the boards to stir up a fight landing them both in the penalty box.
The Rampage fought back in the second period tying the game 1-1 at the 6:20 mark when Matt Watkins took a shot from the blue line that hit the cross bar and with a loose puck in front of the crease Colin Long was there to punch it in past Aeros goaltender Anton Kudobin. Dan Sexton was credited with the second assist on Long's goal.
Less than two minutes later Houston responded when Gregg Johnson chased the puck up to beat Rampage netminder Timo Pielmeier and put the Aeros up 2-1. Former Rampage enforcer Simon Ferguson and Aeros defenseman Jamie Fraser were credited with the assists on Johnson's goal.
The Rampage evened the score just over four minutes into the third frame when left wing Jay Henderson launched a shot running down the right side that beat Aeros goaltender Wade Dubielewicz stick side. Stu Bickel and Sexton were credited with the assists on Henderson's goal that forced the game to overtime.
The Aeros dominated the five minute overtime with three shots recorded against Rampage netminder Pielmeier while the Rampage posted no shots in the extra period.
Both goaltenders battled it out in the shootout with no score through five rounds. In the sixth round, Rampage center Maxime Macenauer attempted to sneak the puck around Dubielewicz right leg but was denied. Aeros center Chad Rau's attempt was successful when the puck deflected off of Pielmeier's stick and over his right pad leg into the net.
The Rampage will wrap up their preseason schedule tomorrow when they travel to Austin to face the Texas Stars at 3 p.m. in their brand new arena, Cedar Park Center. The Rampage kicked off the preseason on Thursday with a 2-1 loss to the Stars at Northwoods Ice Center, the Rampage's official practice facility.
