Houston Aeros News Release

HOUSTON - It was a hard fought game at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center (SLICE) as the Aeros pulled out a 3-2 shootout win over San Antonio in their pre-season opener. Both teams failed to score through their first five shooters, but Chad Rau put an end to the insanity when his shot squeaked through the five-hole of Rampage goaltender Timo Pielmeier to end it.

"I thought the guys did a great job putting in place what we've been teaching," said Head Coach Kevin Constantine. "We played like a team, so it's obvious the guys paid a lot of attention in our practices and meetings, so we were really, really happy".

The Aeros jumped ahead in the first period when Maxim Noreau's shot from the point deflected off Duncan Milroy for the power play goal. More fireworks later in the period when former San Antonio defenseman and Aeros captain Ryan Lannon crushed Shawn Weller into the boards resulting in some fisticuffs. They both served five-minute majors for fighting.

The Rampage tied the game with 13:40 left in the second period. Matt Watkins' shot from the blue line deflected to the stick of Colin Long who beat Anton Khudobin for the goal. The Aeros would answer two minutes later, though, when Gregg Johnson found the net from just outside the crease to put Houston up 2-1.

However, San Antonio would not say die. They tied the game 4:13 into the third period when Jay Henderson deflected an entry pass top shelf to beat Wade Dubielewicz.

The Aeros finish their pre-season slate Monday night in Cedar Park when they face the expansion Texas Stars at 7 PM. The Aeros begin the season with two games in Manitoba October 2 and 3 and return to Toyota Center for their home opener against the Stars Friday, October 9. The puck drops at 7:35 PM and the first 3,000 fans will receive magnetic magnets.
