Peoria Rivermen News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. (September 26, 2009) -The Peoria Rivermen closed out their preseason schedule with a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Rockford IceHogs at the Rockford MetroCentre. The Rivermen will now turn their attention to their regular season opener on Saturday, Oct. 3 against the Grand Rapids Griffins at Carver Arena.
The IceHogs controlled the first period and outshot the Rivermen 13-5 en route to building themselves the 3-0 lead. The first 3:15 of the game featured 15 penalty minutes with one fight between Peoria's Justin Sawyer and Rockford's Ryan Flinn. The Rivermen were then forced to try and kill an extended penalty as Chris Porter's minor rolled into Chris Morehouse's double-minor for high-sticking. Rockford's power play generated the first goal at the 7:00 mark with Alex Tanguay taking the game's first tally. Nathan Davis and Bracken Kearns scored 27 seconds apart at 18:50 and 19:17 to increase the lead before the break.
Another quick pair of goals, midway through the second period, gave the IceHogs a 5-0 lead. Rivermen netminder Hannu Toivonen was lifted halfway through the frame, Danny Battochio was inserted and tested immediately. Davis tapped in his second of the night at 13:34 after a nice setup from Pete MacAthur. Just 1:10 later, Rockford took a 5-0 lead courtesy of Bracken Kearns third goal of the preseason.
Peoria's lone offensive highlight came on Brendan Bell's goal at 15:11 of the third period. Porter fed Julian Talbot as he entered the zone and after working to the outside found a trailing Bell in the slot. Bell shoveled a one-timer over the glove of Joe Fallon for Peoria's only goal of the night.
Toivonen made 17 saves on 20 shots in 29:20 of work before Battachio finished the game with 12 saves on 14 shots. Fallon stopped 30 of 31 in net for the âHogs.
