Adirondack Phantoms News Release
ALBANY, NY - The Adirondack Phantoms and the Albany River Rats Saturday night at the Times Union Center.
After losing to the Phantoms in a shootout Friday night in Glens Falls, the River Rats took their first lead as Stefan Chaput knocked in a rebound for a power play goal at 6:53 of the opening period. Less than two minutes later Albany doubled their lead when Harrison Reed skated down the right wing and fired a shot through the pads of rookie goaltender Nic Riopel at 8:42. At the 10:10 the intensity heated up after a whistle leading to two fights and a combined 44 minutes of penalties. The Rats out-shot Adirondack 18-5 in the first period and held on to a 2-0 lead.
Just 2:18 into the second period Albany extended their lead to 3-0 as Mike Angelidis followed up a Brad Herauf shot and lifted the rebound past the fallen Riopel. 83 seconds later Riopel kept the deficit at three when he stopped Zach Boychuk's penalty shot attempt. Soon after the Phantoms got on the board at 6:38 with a power play goal as Marc-Andre Bourdon's pass redirected off Bryan Marshall's skate and into the net. Halfway through the period backup goalie Michael Teslak replaced Riopel in a scheduled swap. Late in the frame the River Rats added to their goal total on a five-on-three power play as Bryan Rodney snapped a pass across the top of the crease to Boychuk for a one-timer past Teslak at 18:55 and a 4-1 lead.
Albany added a fifth goal in the third period as Boychuk set up Jacob MicFlikier at 16:30. There was a brief exchange between Andrew Lord and Benn Olson as the final horn sounded, adding ten more penalty minutes to the total; the team's combined for 106 minutes of penalties in the game.
Albany starter Justin Peters earned the victory and stopped 15-of-16 shots in the game. Adirondack starter Nic Riopel made 19 saves on 22 shots in the first 29:56 of action and was tagged with the loss.
