Chicago Wolves News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.---Chicago center Darryl Smith potted the game-wining overtime goal and forwards Kevin Doell and Brett Sterling each notched markers as the Wolves closed out their preseason slate with their second straight win, a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals at the Hoffman Estates Community Center and Ice Arena Saturday night.
Smith's first goal of the preseason came 2:48 into overtime when he picked up a loose puck in the crease and shoveled it past Admirals goaltender Chet Pickard.
Chicago (2-1-0-0) opened scoring at 16:52 of the second period when Doell scored his third goal of the preseason. Center Johnny Pohl held the puck behind the Milwaukee net and passed it out front to Doell, who wristed a shot past Pickard.
Milwaukee (0-1-1-0) knotted the score at one at 8:06 of the third period when Wolves goaltender Kevin Armstrong mishandled the puck behind the net and it bounced to Admirals center Wacey Rabbit, who deposited the puck into the open net from his knees.
Armstrong (1-0-0) turned aside 17 of 19 shots in 31:16 of action, while goaltender Peter Mannino also kicked out 17 shots for the Wolves.
The Wolves regained the lead just 98 seconds later when defenseman Brett Motherwell sprung Sterling on a breakaway. The left wing deked Pickard and slid the puck between the netminder's legs at 9:44 of the final frame.
Pickard posted 19 saves in 30:36 of action after replacing Jeremy Smith at 31:32. Smith thwarted all 15 shots he faced.
The Admirals tied the game, 2-2, with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. With Pickard pulled for the extra attacker, right wing Chris Mueller's shot was thwarted by Armstong, but the rebound kicked out to defenseman Ethan Smith, who fired a one-timer past the Wolves goalie.
The Wolves begin their 16th season when they host the Admirals at the Allstate Arena on Sat., Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.
