Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that left-handed pitcher Aaron Shafer has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with right forearm tightness suffered during his start in Beloit on Sunday. As a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher Manolin DeLeon has been added to the Chiefs roster and will join the Chiefs in time for tonight's game in Peoria.
Shafer, a second round pick in 2008 out of Wichita State University, pitched in short-season Boise last year. Last season he had an ERA of 3.09 in eight games with seven starts. He pitched 32 innings and gave up 28 hits with five walks and 24 strikeouts. Shafer goes to the DL leading the Chiefs in wins with four. In seven games he has posted a 5.60 ERA in 35.1 innings.
DeLeon, a non-drafted free agent singed by the Cubs in 2006, pitched a majority of last season in Mesa, Arizona where he went 1-0 and appeared in 15 games with six saves. In 22 innings of work he posted a 2.45 ERA with four walks and 22 strikeouts.
Peoria and West Michigan are scheduled to play this evening beginning at 6:30 at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs will send RH Chris Carpenter (1-2, 2.72) to the mound against RH Luke Putkonen (2-1, 2.65) for the Whitecaps. Tonight is Wacky Wednesday when all fans can enjoy free hot dogs and peanuts through the seventh inning. There will also be a salute to indoor plumbing as part of the Wacky Wednesday promotion.
The Chiefs continue their three-game series against the Whitecaps until Friday. Peoria will then host South Bend and Clinton in their nine-game home stand that wraps up Thursday, May 28.
