Sharks funky week ends with a shutout victory in Springfield

Rewind the Tape:

11.11.08 - Worcester 0 - Springfield 2 - DCU Center

Devan Dubnyk recorded his first shutout in the AHL making 46 saves to blank the Sharks 2-0 on Veteran's Day at the DCU Center. Former Worcester Ice Cat Derek Bekar scored the game winning goal at 11:29 of the first period on Gerald Coleman making his first start in a Sharks uniform. Worcester went 0-7 on the power play outshooting the Falcons 46-16 in the contest.

11.14.08 - Worcester 3 - Providence 8 - Dunkin Donuts Center

Mikko Lehtonen and Matt Marquardt each scored two goals as the Bruins defeated the Sharks 8-3 in Providence. Steven Zalewski, Cory Larose, and Riley Armstrong each scored goals for the Sharks. Gerald Coleman made 16 saves on 21 shots before being replaced by Kyle Jones at 12:57 of the 2nd period. Worcester outshot the Bruins 35-30 with each team connecting once with the man advantage. Johnny Boychuk scored a goal and was +5 for the Bruins.

11.15.08 - Worcester - Springfield - DCU Center

Due to a small electrical fire that produced a power failure just a few minutes before the opening faceoff, the Sharks game vs. the Springfield Falcons was postponed. Sharks players and Hannah Montana star, Jason Earles, signed autographs until 9:30p.m. Tickets for the November 15th game can be redeemed for any of the remaining Sharks regular season games this season at the DCU Center Box Office or by calling the Worcester Sharks front office at 508.929.0500. The game has yet to be rescheduled.

11.16.08 - Worcester 3 - Springfield 0 - Mass Mutual Center

The Worcester Sharks allowed a season low 11 shots on goal, received points from eight different players, and Taylor Dakers posted his first professional shutout in a dominant team performance in a 3-0 victory over the Springfield Falcons at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield on Sunday afternoon. T.J. Fox recorded the game winner at 17:57 of the first period, his 1st goal of the season. Cory Larose struck on the power play while Mike Morris added insurance for the Sharks. Worcester outshot the Falcons 35-11.

Sharks in the Atlantic...

The Sharks (6-8-0-0) swim in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 12 points, 11 points behind the first place Portland Pirates.

Shark Bites:

*Worcester have already used four goaltenders in goal this season (Greiss, Jones, Coleman, and Dakers) Last season, the Sharks used just three goalies through 80 games. (Greiss, Patzold, and Dakers)

Tom Cavanagh and Cory Larose lead the Sharks with four power play goals a piece.

*The Sharks have 20 fighting major penalties this season through 14 games. Eight different players have dropped the gloves already this season (Frazer McLaren (8), Westgarth (6), Moore, Demers, Cavanagh, McGinn, Desjardins, and DaSilva).

*The Sharks have allowed four shorthanded goals in the 14 games this season (allowed just 7 in 80 games last season).

*Worcester has outshot its opponents in all 14 games this season and leads the AHL with shots per game (37.57) and shots against per game (21.86)

*The Sharks allowed an AHL low 11 shots on goal at Springfield on Sunday.

*Taylor Dakers recorded his first professional shutout on Sunday making 11 saves. It was just the 2nd shutout in franchise history as Dmitri Patzold stoned the Bruins on 1/11/08 with 25 saves in Providence.

*Ryan Vesce leads the team with seven power play assists.

*Derek Joslin is 2nd in the AHL among defensemen with 49 shots on goal.

*Frazer McLaren leads all AHL rookies with eight fighting major penalties.

Roster Moves:

*The Worcester Sharks loaned goaltender Kyle Jones to Phoenix in the ECHL. The 25-year-old rookie played in three games with the Worcester Sharks this season recording a 1-1-0 record with a 5.20gaa and a .756 save percentage. The 6-foot, 195-pound North Delta, British Columbia native spent the last four seasons with St. Norbert (NCAA) becoming the winningest goaltender in Division 3 history with an 87-10-8 record along with 25 shutouts.

Worcester to host the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications!

The Sharks and the city of Worcester will host the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications on January 25th and 26th at the DCU Center. Tickets are on sale to the general public now. The 2009 event in Worcester will mark the fourth time since it was revived in 1995 that the AHL All-Star Classic will take place in New England. The AHL All-Star Classic was last held in Massachusetts in 1959 at the Eastern States Coliseum in West Springfield.

Coming Up:

The Sharks return to Worcester for a Wednesday evening game (7:05p.m.) against the Norfolk Admirals. As with every Wednesday game at the DCU Center, $1 hot dogs will be available all night! Worcester will then fly to Texas for a pair of games. The Sharks will play in Houston on Saturday (8:35p.m.) and San Antonio on Sunday (4:00p.m.).
