Checkers drop Sea Wolves in OT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Despite giving up the lead late in the third period, the Charlotte Checkers downed the Mississippi Sea Wolves in overtime by a score of 3-2.
A late goal in the first period by the Sea Wolves forward Alexandre Parent started the scoring as he redirected a pass from Ryan Cruthers between the legs of Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis at 18:13 putting the Seal Wolves up 1-0 after twenty minutes.
The start of the second period saw the Checkers on a five-on-three goal power play. It would be a quick shot by Checkers defenseman Julien Brouillette that blew past Mississippi goalie Jeremy Duchesne at :14 tying the game at 1-1. The Checkers would capture their first lead of the contest when Joe Zappala skated in from the boards and fired the puck over the shoulder of a crouching Duchesne at 19:52 putting the Checkers up 2-1 after two periods.
Late in the third, the Sea Wolves tied the contest when Parent blasted a screen shot past Jakaitis at 17:13 locking the game at 2-2 after regulation.
After killing off a late penalty in third period and into overtime, the Checkers Mike Bayrack skated in and sent a shot between the legs of Duchesne at 3:40 of overtime giving the Checkers a 3-2 victory.
The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 19 against the South Carolina Stingrays at a special 7 P.M.. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
