Las Vegas Wranglers to Honor the Stick
November 7, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
LAS VEGAS - The Las Vegas Wranglers® unveiled plans today to honor the Stick at its game against the Utah Grizzlies on Saturday, December 20th at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The announcement follows yesterday's National Toy Hall of Fame® revelation that the Stick, alongside the Skateboard and the Baby Doll, has been inducted into their Hall.
"Hockey has a special place in its heart for the Stick," said Las Vegas Wranglers President and COO Billy Johnson. "Hockey players on ice rinks around the globe use sticks when they play hockey. Distinction for the Stick is overdue."
The Wranglers also announced that, with the planned ceremony occurring during the holiday season, they plan to give away replica sticks to the first 1,000 fans. "These will be the best sticks we can find," Johnson said. "Some may even have bark on them. Real authentic, I'd say."
Johnson said the team would not give away hockey sticks as that might serve as a "slight to all the sticks that paved the way" for the modern sticks that are used as toys today.
Along with the awarding of a plaque to the Stick during the first intermission, the team suggested arrangements were being made to produce a tribute video featuring Las Vegas celebrities sharing their fondest memories of the Stick.
Previous Hall inductees the Cardboard Box and the Bicycle are expected to attend the December 20th game as well. While the team refused comment on the rumor that the Baby Doll had not been extended an invitation, it did confirm that the Stick's more notorious cousin -- the Switch -- will not be allowed admission.
The Las Vegas Wranglers® are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames and play their home games in the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas hosts Bakersfield tonight at 7:30 PM and Phoenix on Saturday, November 8th at 7:30 PM.
2008-09 season seat packages are on sale now at (702) 471-PUCK. The Wranglers play all 36 regular season home games at the Orleans Arena, located at the Orleans Hotel and Casino at 4500 W. Tropicana Avenue.
Individual game tickets are on sale now at (702) 284-7777.
