Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (5-2-1) recorded their third straight victory on Friday night after scoring three third period goals and getting solid goaltending from Anton Khudobin who stopped 37 shots in a 3-1 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators (2-3-2) at Germain Arena.
Khudobin (3-1-0) turned in 20 saves in the third period alone, and for the second straight game the Everblades penalty killers came up big killing off four Gwinnett power plays in the final period.
Offensively, the Everblades opened the scoring in the second period when newcomer Yannick Tifu deflected a perfect pass from Ernie Hartlieb at the top of the crease and between the pads of Gwinnet goaltender Kevin Nastiuk at 4:44, sending the crowd of 5,143 to their feet. Brad Zanon also assisted on Tifu's first goal of the season.
Just past the midpoint of the second period Danick Bouchard tallied his fifth goal of the season after completing a nice 2-on-1 rush to the net with Ryan Lang. Lang's pass from the left circle found Bouchard's stick at the right post for an easy defection at 10:19. Ross Carlson extended his point-scoring streak to six with the second assist on the goal.
Gwinnett trimmed the Everblades lead to one shortly after however with a power play goal at 13:13. Brandon Kaleniecki recorded his third goal of the year after picking up a rebound from Khudobin in the right circle and one-timing the puck into the open net, but the Everblades stormed right back to regain their two goal lead just over a minute and a half later.
Mathieu Roy gave the Everblades that 3-1 lead at 14:51 when he drove hard to the net. With a Gladiator player draped on him, and a delayed penalty coming against Gwinnett, Roy cut through the right circle to the front of the net where he muscled the puck past Nastiuk for his second goal of the season. Andrew Fournier helped out getting the lone assist.
The Everblades survived the third period despite getting out shot 20-4 to pick up their third win on home ice and improve to 2-0-0 vs. Gwinnett this season.
Nastiuk (2-2-2) suffered his second straight loss to his former team allowing the three goals on 29 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 0-of-2, while the Gladiators finished the night 1-of-8.
