Checkers Trade For Zappala

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Head coach and general manager of the Charlotte Checkers Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has traded for forward Joe Zappala from the Reading Royals in exchange for future considerations.

Zappala, 6-foot-0, 205 pounds hails from Medford, Mass. and played the last two seasons with the Royals. During that time, he suited up in 115 games scoring 41 goals and 47 assists for 88 points with 200 penalty minutes. Zappala is a four year product of Yale University where he dressed in 124 collegiate games garnering 39 goals and 44 assists for 83 points with 152 penalty minutes. Zappala has not suited up in a game this season but is expected to make his debut with the Checkers tonight against the Augusta Lynx.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Nov. 8th against the South Carolina Stringrays at 7 p.m. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are entering their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $396.
