Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Kinston Indians scored four innings in poorly played fourth inning for Myrtle Beach en route to a 6-4 victory in game three in front of 4,519 fans at BB&T Coastal Field. Although the Pelicans lost in game three, they clinched the second half Southern Division title as Frederick defeated Winston-Salem 6-4. The Birds remain one win shy of breaking the franchise record of 88 set back in 2000.
Kinston got off to a quick start against Pelicans starter Cole Rohrbough. On the first pitch of the game, Lucas Montero hit a double up the left field line. After he advanced up to third, Nick Weglarz picked up an RBI on a slow chopper to first base.
In the fourth, the Pelicans self destructed and the K-Tribe capitalized. Niuman Romero singled to open the inning. After stealing third, he was brought home on a hard hit chopper to third that hopped over the back-hand attempt by Eric Campbell. Later in the inning, Chad Lundahl committed a two run error on a routine grounder to short that pushed the lead to 4-0. The K-Tribe added one more run as Tyler Flowers skipped a throw into center field, which allowed Cristo Arnal to score. Rohrbough committed two balks in the inning as well, while Kinston stole third uncontested on three separate occasions.
Down 5-0, the Pelicans fought back and plated one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Ernesto Mejia singled and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Concepcion Rodriguez. In the sixth, Tyler Flowers delivered an RBI single with Eric Campbell at second to cut the deficit to 5-2. In the seventh, Jon Mark Owings delivered a double through the alley in left-center field to score Jason Heyward, who led off with a double down the left field line.
Kinston added an insurance run in the eighth as Lucas Montero delivered a sharp single to right field against reliever Nick Fellman to score Johnny Drennen. The scoring would halt there as the Pelicans went quietly in the ninth inning.
The Pelicans will square off with Kinston in the final regular season home game on Monday, September 1st at 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans will send RHP Ryne Reynoso (10-6, 3.29) to the hill, while the Kinston Indians will counter with LHP Shawn Nottingham (3-4, 4.66).
