Winfree homer leads Rock Cats to win

New Britain, CT - David Winfree blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning that gave the Rock Cats a 3-2 win over the visiting Akron Aeros.

The Rock Cats pitching staff held the Aeros at bay throughout the night to secure the victory. Rock Cats starter Kyle Aselton (6-6, 4.78) tossed six solid innings, limiting the Aeros to seven hits and two runs in six innings. Zach Ward and Jose Mijares combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Robert Delaney retired the only batter he faced for the final out of the game to notch the save.

Both teams were blanked through the first three innings until Akron finally broke through in the fourth. Stephen Head (3-for-4) led off the inning with a single and Matthew Whitney followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position. Bronson Sardinha and Damaso Espino both delivered RBI singles to put the Aeros ahead, 2-0.

The Rock Cats cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Winfree doubled and scored on a single by Rodolfo Palacios. In the next inning, Danny Valencia hit a two-out double to center field. Winfree then blasted a shot over the center field wall for his team leading 19th home run of the season.

Ryan Edell (6-8, 3.96) lasted five innings, surrendering three runs - two earned - on six hits.
