New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release


Manchester, NH- Robert Ray allowed one earned run in seven innings and won for the second time in two New Hampshire starts as the Fisher Cats beat the Connecticut Defenders 6-1 Thursday night before 5,173 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

Ray (2-0) allowed 10 hits, walked two and struck out one. He becomes the first Fisher Cats pitcher to win his first two starts since Davis Romero in 2006.

New Hampshire (26-45), in taking two of three games from Connecticut (32-38), opened a 3-0 lead in the last of the third inning. Anthony Hatch led off with a single off starting and losing pitcher Adam Cowart (5-5). He went to third base when a pickoff attempt was misplayed for an error. Chris Gutierrez then doubled Hatch in to make it 1-0. Gutierrez scored on an RBI double by Aaron Mathews. Mathews scored on a double by Travis Snider.

The Defenders scored a run in the top of the sixth inning. Ben Copeland (2-for-4) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a broken bat single by Eliezer Alfonzo.

New Hampshire extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a lead off home run by Kyle Phillips (3-for-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI) .

The Fihser Cats added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Scott Campbell singled and was erased on a fielders choice by Aaron Mathews. Mathews scored on a double by Snider.

Snider (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 2B) has driven in 42 runs, which leads the Fisher Cats. He now has a 12-game hitting streak dating back to June 5.

Phillips hit a second home run of the game, leading off the last of the eighth inning against reliever Kelvin Pichardo. It was his first multi-home run game of the season for Phillips, who last hit two in one game on April 29, 2007 when with Advanced-A Dunedin.

Jared Gothreaux worked a perfect eighth inning in relief for New Hampshire, striking out two batters. Daryl Harang retired the Defenders 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning.

The homestand continues Friday night at 7:05pm against the Portland Sea Dogs. LHP Dave Gassner (0-1, 6.00) starts for Portland against New Hampshire LHP Brett Cecil (1-1, 3.86).
