Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - Scott Mitchinson posted his seventh quality start in his last eight outings and Shane Keough delivered a two-run single during a fifth-inning rally as the Kane County Cougars held off the Beloit Snappers for a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in front of 6,942 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars split the four-game series with Beloit and now lead the Snappers by 4.5 games for the first-half wildcard playoff spot with seven remaining. They also remain right behind first-place Clinton and play a four-game series there starting Monday night.
Â
Mitchinson gave up his first run in the second inning, the first earned run he had allowed in 28 2/3 innings, but the Cougars turned the game around against David Bromberg (4-4) in the fifth. Justin Frash walked with the bases loaded to tie it, 1-1, Keough nailed his two-RBI base hit for a 3-1 count and Adam Klein followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
Â
The Snappers climbed back with one in the sixth and another in the eighth against Mitchinson (5-2), who gave up three runs on five hits, walked one and fanned five in seven-plus innings. Justin Friend, Brad Hertzler and Chad Kerfoot combined for two scoreless innings to close out the game, with Kerfoot notching his second save.
Â
The Cougars (37-25) start their series against Clinton on Monday night at 7 CT when Craig Italiano (7-0, 0.74) faces Neftali Feliz (5-2, 2.33).
