
Kernels complete first home series sweep, 9-6, over Burlington

June 8, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels completed their first home series sweep of a Midwest League opponent in the 2008 season with a 9-6 win over the Burlington Bees on Sunday afternoon at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Kernel offense exploded for a season high 16 hits as Hector Estrella, Jeremy Moore and Julio Perez all hit home runs. The three team home runs also ties a season high. Estrella finished the game 2 for 5 with 3 RBI and Moore was 5 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI. Andrew Romine was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI and Clay Fuller was 2 for 3 with an RBI and stolen base.
Kernels starter Robert Fish (4-2) struggled at times, but held on for the win, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out five over 6.1 innings. Brian Chambers came on to stop a Burlington rally with two strikeouts over 1.2 innings. And Eddie McKiernan allowed a hit and struck out two in the ninth for his second save.
Burlington starter Sam Runion (1-4) allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and gave up two home runs over three innings in taking the loss. Newly acquired Juan Rivera was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Nick Van Stratten and Jason Taylor had 2 RBI each.
The Kernels now hit the road for the remainder of the first half of the season, with games at Beloit and Kane County. The Kernels next home game is Thursday, June 19 when they host the Quad Cities River Bandits at 7 pm.
