WICHITA, KS -- Sioux City scored twice in the 9th against Wichita's closer Byron Embry but the rally fell short as the Wingnuts took Game 1 of the 4 game series, 3-2 at Lawerence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.

Dusty Bergman had his 2nd straight solid outing for the Explorers, going 6 + innings, allowing all 3 runs on 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4. Wichita got a RBI double from Brenan Herrara in the 2nd to take a 1-0 lead. The Wingnuts scored twice in the 7th. Chris Colton got a leadoff walk and then Herrara hit a fly ball to left that Chad Gabriel lost in the lights for a double and then Stephen Pearson looped a single in for the RBI, knocking Bergman from the game. Felipe Del Rosario then looped in a RBI single off of Paige Dumont to make it 3-0 Nuts.

Sioux City would attempt a rally against Wingnut closer Byron Embry, who had not allowed a run all season long. Embry would walk Chris Grossman on 4 straight pitches to start the 9th. After Juan Camacho struck out, Chad Gabriel ripped a single to left and a wild pitch by Embry moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Alex Llanos would hit a grounder to 2nd to score Grossman and end the shutout. Luke Hetherington would then hit a slow chopper to third and beat it out for an infield single that would score Gabriel. However, Embry would get out of the jam by striking out Geoff Wagner to end the game.

Gabriel, Grossman, and Nick McCoola would each get 2 hits apiece for the Explorers but the X's dropped their 2nd in a row and have lost 5 in 6 games this season to the Wingnuts. Nick Singleton will try and get the X's back in the win column on Saturday night, lefty Leonard Landeros will answer the call for Wichita. Game time is 7:05 and can be heard on 1360 KSCJ and xsbaseball.com.
