St. Paul Saints News Release

SHREVEPORT, LA (May 30, 2008) - After driving across the state of Texas and getting into Louisiana at two in the afternoon on Friday, the St. Paul Saints looked a little weary as they lost to the Shreveport Sports 11-2 on Friday night at Fairgrounds Field, snapping their four game winning streak.

The Saints took the lead in the first inning when Scooter Jordan and Andrew Bennett led off with back-to-back singles. Two outs later Jason Colson drove them both home with a single to right. Colson finished the night 2-4.

The Sports took advantage of the Saints fatigue in the third as they exploded for six runs while sending 12 men to the plate. The Sports led off with four consecutive singles, with the third of the inning by Casey Haugen, driving in a run. With the bases loaded Bobby Bratton doubled home two and an errant throw to third by left fielder Brent Krause scored Deacon Burns making it 4-2. Ron Fenwick followed with a sacrifice fly making it 5-2. Tommy Bryant tripled and Adam Hale reached on an error by Saints second baseman Andrew Bennett allowing Hale to score and chasing Saints starter Brian Whinnery.

Sports starter Daniel Welch did the rest. He allowed just four more hits after the first inning tossing a complete game allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out six to earn his first victory of the season.

Saints reliever Dustin Bolton, who followed Whinnery, pitched well going 3.2 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking three and striking out four.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (4-0, 1.83) to the mound against Sports RHP Thad Markray (2-1, 4.32). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
