Bowie Baysox to kick it old school this Sunday

(Bowie, MD) - The Bowie Baysox, Class AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, will host the first ever Vintage Baseball Day this Sunday, May 18 when they take on the Connecticut Defenders. Stadium gates will open early at 12:30 p.m. and fans will be treated to a special pre-Baysox game exhibition baseball game played by members of the Chesapeake and Potomac Base Ball Club beginning at 12:45 pm. The exhibition will last for three innings prior to the Baysox taking on the Defenders at 2:05 pm.

The Chesapeake and Potomac Base Ball Club is a Vintage Ball Team that plays by nineteenth century rules, using authentic replicas of nineteenth century equipment and uniforms. The teams do not use gloves when playing in the field. During the exhibition game, the Chesapeake and Potomac Base Ball Club will utilize the rules of the game from the 1860's.

When the Baysox take the field at 2:05 pm, they will be wearing replica 1860's Baltimore Excelsiors Base Ball Club jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game. During the game, fans will be able to bid on the jerseys. Winning bidders will get to come onto the field after the game and get their jerseys right off of the player's back. The players will autograph the jerseys and are available for photographs with the winning bidders.

As fans enter the ballpark, they will be greeted by the sounds of Baltimore's own Federal City Brass Band. Founded in 2002 by Jari Villanueva and Mark Elrod, the Federal City Brass Band recreates the sound and appearance of a Union Army regimental brass band of the 1860s. The instruments used by The Federal City Brass Band are originals dating to the mid-19th century, and come from the collections of band members. Sources of the music the band plays include original band journals and sheet music of the Civil War era. The uniforms worn by bandsmen are reproductions based on originals and made from the closest comparable wool and cotton fabrics, in some cases using vegetable dyes and original recipes from 19th century mills.

The Federal City Brass band will entertain fans with period music and a baseball tunes as fans enter the stadium and from the stands.

The event will also be highlighted by a special performance by Baltimore's own Ultimate Abbott & Costello Tribute Show and will feature their hit rendition of the Abbott & Costello's famous "Who's On First?" immediately following the exhibition game. Bill Riley and Joe Ziegler transform themselves into Bud Abbott and Lou Costello through vintage dress and an authentic recreation of the team's mannerisms and vocal stylings. They perform with pinpoint accuracy many of the vaudeville and burlesque routines made famous by Bud and Lou on stage, screen, radio and television, including the classic baseball routine, "Who's On First?".
