Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Dominic Brown drove in two runs with double in the top of the 11th inning to help the BlueClaws salvage a 7-4 victory over Delmarva at Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Brown's two RBI hit broke a 4-4 deadlock after a wild final four innings. Mike Durant singled two batters later off of Cliff Flagello (0-2) to score Brown for some added insurance.
The BlueClaws (4-6) led throughout behind a solid start from Drew Naylor only to see Delmarva take their first lead of the day with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
But holding a 3-2 in the ninth, Shorebirds closer Tim Mattaliano could not seal the victory, as Joel Naughton scored two runs with a base hit with two outs in the ninth to help the BlueClaws reclaim the lead.
The 4-3 Lakewood advantage did not last long, as the Shorebirds (4-5) scored one in the bottom of the ninth against Jared Simon (3-1) on an RBI base hit from David Cash. Simon took control after the hit however, and retired the next seven hitters in order to take the win.
Naylor did not allow a baserunner for the first 3 2/3 innings and allowed only three runners to reach second through the first seven innings.
But the Australian right-hander ran into serious trouble in the eighth inning. He gave up back-to-back singles without notching an out before being replaced by Moises Melendez.
Pedro Florimon loaded the bases with a Jesus Sanchez error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Melendez then walked the pinch hitter Cash on four pitches before Tyler Henson singled into centerfield to give the Shorebirds their first lead of the day.
Melendez and Simon prevented any further damage, retiring three straight to end the threat.
The no-decision was a harsh result for Naylor, who struck out eight and walked just one in seven innings. He was charged with two runs on five hits, through both runs scored after his departure from the game.
Highly regarded left-hander Tony Butler kept the Shorebirds (5-4) in the game, giving up two runs on five hits over six innings. The Orioles prospect also struck out four BlueClaws hitters and walked one.
The 'Claws got on the board with two quick runs in the second inning. Lakewood tallied three straight hits to tally the two runs-Karl Bolt double d to start the inning, Matt Rizzotti reached on a single and Dennis Winn drove them both in with a double to rightfield.
The BlueClaws next head to Eastlake, Ohio for a quick two-game series with the Lake County Captains. First pitch on Monday night is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
