Albany Signs Josh Engel To Amateur Contract

ALBANY, NY - The Albany River Rats announced today that they have signed University of Wisconsin senior defenseman Josh Engel to an Amateur Tryout Agreement.

Engel, 23, recently completed his senior season playing for the University of Wisconsin Badgers of the WCHA conference. The Rice Lake, Wisconsin native set career-highs with 35 games played, eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) and 18 penalty minutes. Undrafted through college, Engel (6'3", 210 lbs) completed his four-year NCAA Division I career having appeared in 98 games and scoring 16 points (3 goals, 13 assists. As a sophomore he helped Wisconsin win the 2006 NCAA Division Ice Hockey Championship with a 2-1 win over Boston College in the final at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. Engel played a key roll in helping the Badgers advance to the 2006 Frozen Four; he had the lone assist on Jack Skille's triple overtime goal in a 1-0 win over Cornell in the Midwest Regional finals.

Engel signed an ATO with Albany and joined the team for practice on the road in Norfolk, Virginia on Thursday afternoon. He is looking to make his AHL and Pro hockey debut over the weekend against the Admirals.

The River Rats will play their next three games against the Norfolk Admirals, beginning with two games this weekend in Virginia. The Rats are back in action on Friday, April 4th for a 7:15 pm face off in Norfolk at the Scope. Albany's next home game is on Wednesday, April 9th against the Norfolk Admirals; a 7:00 pm face off at the Times Union Center.
