Myrtle Musings...
V for Victory...The Pelicans erased an early two-run deficit by scoring the final five runs of the game and claiming the rubber-match of their three-game series with Potomac by a final score of 5-2 Sunday evening at BB&T Coastal Field. RF Quentin Davis drove in a pair of two-out runs, and SS Michael Fisher also had a two-RBI performance thanks to a huge assist from teammate Derrick Arnold. With runners at second and third and two gone in the bottom of the fourth, Fisher hit a slow roller to second. Potomac's Matt Rogelstad came charging in but Fisher was running hard out of the box and beat the throw as Jeff Stevens scored easily from third. Arnold was also going on contact from second base however, and by the time the Nationals realized he had never slowed down around third the throw to the plate was late as Fisher earned an ultra-rare two-run infield single.
Sayonara Soup...Pelicans 3B Eric Campbell was placed on the suspended list for unspecified disciplinary reasons before Sunday's game and will not play again this season. Campbell, the no.-6 prospect in the Braves system at the start of the year, made two trips to the disabled list this year and also struggled with an effort level that could best be described as inconsistent. He was hitting .221 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI in 81 games. This marks the second straight team that Campbell has left early; he was also sent home from his club in the Hawaiian Winter League in the off-season. Campbell is also the second Pelicans player put on the suspended list the season, as LHP Jake Stevens was suspended on August 3rd. Stevens has since moved back to his home in Florida and enrolled in college, and appears to have retired for all intents and purposes.
Timing is Everything in Life...As we continue the "Quentin Davis for All-Star" campaign, we present a closer look at his numbers. Davis is hitting .274 and leading the team with 62 RBI this year, but he comes alive at the most crucial times. The native of Darlington, SC is hitting .338 with men in scoring position and two away this year, and 53% (33 of 62) of his RBI have come in those situations. Did You Know...The Pelicans are 2-0 since Coastal Federal Field was renamed BB&T Coastal Field.
