PHILADELPHIA, PA - As part of the Second Annual Tour for the Cure, Tim Riley will be spending a lot of time at ballparks this summer. He will visit all 189 major and minor league stadiums on the Tour, including FirstEnergy Park on Friday, while raising money for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund.
Friday night's BlueClaws game is at 7:05 game against Kannapolis. Post-game fireworks follow courtesy of Toyota/Scion World of Lakewood.
The Tour kicked off on April 4, in St. Louis, Mo., and will finish in Riley's hometown of Philadelphia, Pa. on Sept. 9. In those 159 days, the Tour hopes to raise $100,000 through money collected before each game and online contributions with 100 percent of the donations going directly to the Jimmy Fund. The Tour is endorsed by the Jimmy Fund, as well as Minor League Baseball, and is supported by Louisville Slugger and TomTom.
Tour for the Cure is a unique venture to raise funds for cancer research by combining the great American pastime with this vital cause. Cass Sapir, a documentary filmmaker from Providence, R.I. started the Tour and raised over $25,000 in 2006. Riley is the Director of the 2007 Tour for the Cure. He quit his job at a management consulting firm in order to take on this fundraising quest. Long-time friend Chris Richards will accompany him on a good portion of the Tour. He will also be joined by family and friends along the way, but Riley will be the only one on the Tour for the whole entire 159 days.
The Jimmy Fund is dedicated to the understanding, diagnosis, cure, and prevention of cancer at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world-renowned center for cancer treatment and research. The Jimmy Fund provides training for new generations of physicians and scientists and also disseminates innovative patient therapies and scientific discoveries across the United States and throughout the world. The Jimmy Fund has had ties with Major League Baseball since 1948 and is an official charity of the Boston Red Sox.
