Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Former Manchester Monarch and current Los Angeles Kings center Michael Cammalleri and Associate Coach Mike Johnston have been selected to represent Canada at the 2007 World Championship tournament, the Kings announced today in conjunction with Team Canada. Both Cammalleri, one of the first five players named to this year's team, and Johnston will travel to Moscow, Russia, where the tournament takes place from April 27-May 13.
Cammalleri, 24, will represent Canada in international competition for the fourth time. Previously, he played at the 2006 World Championships in Latvia (fourth place - 8GP, 1-4=5), the 2002 World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic (Silver Medal - 7GP, 7-4=11) where he led the tournament in points and goals, and in the 2001 World Junior Championships in Moscow (Silver Medal - 7GP, 4-2=6).
A native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Cammalleri has 76 points (32-44=76), 48 penalty minutes and a plus-5 rating in 78 games with the Kings this season. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Cammalleri leads the club this season in points (76), assists (44) and power play goals (15) and he has already established new career highs for goals (32), assists (44) and points (76). Originally selected by the Kings in the second-round (49th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Cammalleri is in his fourth NHL season (all with the Kings).
Johnston, 50, will step back behind the Canadian bench at a World Championship tournament for the first time since 1999 in Norway, where he led Canada to a fourth place finish as Head Coach and General Manager. A native of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Johnston was an Assistant Coach at the World Championships from 1994-98, winning a Gold Medal in 1997. Johnston is also a two-time Gold Medal winner with the National Junior Team, winning as an Assistant Coach in 1994 and 1995.
