Admirals sit atop the West

March 27, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release

OVERALL...The Admirals come into tonight's action with a 44-21-6-2 record, good for 96 points and sole possession of first place in the West Division, one point up on the Houston Aeros. The Admirals have seven games remaining in the regular season, while the Aeros have nine. Milwaukee is currently on a five-game road trip that saw them play four games in Canada before finishing the trip on Wednesday in Rochester. There is no rest for the weary, however, as they start a three-game road trip on Saturday.

VS. ROCHESTER... The Admirals will travel to Rochester on Wednesday night for their lone meeting with the Amerks at the Blue Cross Arena. In their first meeting of the season the Admirals took a 3-2 OT win on March 3rd in Milwaukee. All-time versus Rochester in regular season play the Ads are 7-1-1, including a 2-1-1 mark in Rochester. The Admirals and Americans met two years in a row in the playoffs, back in 2003 and 2004. In 03 the Ads beat the Amerks 2-1 in a preliminary round of the playoffs and in 04 Milwaukee topped Rochester 4-1 in the Western Conference finals on their way to the Calder Cup Championship.

VS. IOWA...Milwaukee and Iowa hit the ice on Friday for the tenth and final time this season and the fifth time at the Bradley Center. The Ads are 7-1-0-1 versus the Stars thus far this year, including a 4-0 mark at the BC and a 3-1-0-1 record in Iowa. The last time these two teams hit the ice the Admirals came away with a 3-1 win on March 1st at the Bradley Center. The Admirals and Stars played one of the wildest games in the AHL this season on February 11th when the two squads combined for 13 goals and 83 shots and 76 penalty minutes in the Ads 7-6 shoot-out win.

VS. OMAHA... The Admirals and Knights play for the final time this season on Saturday night in Omaha. Simon Gamache scored the only goal of the game on March 20th the last time these two teams did battle, in Milwaukee's 1-0 win. So far this year the Admirals are 6-2-1 versus the Knights with a 2-1-1 mark in Omaha. Omaha currently owns the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division. They are five points up on the Iowa Stars with ten games to go in their season.

LAST WEEK... After winning their first three games last week the Admirals dropped their last two. On Sunday the Ads dropped a 5-2 decision to the Toronto Marlies. Milwaukee surrendered the first five goals of the game. Four first-period goals by Manitoba placed the Admirals in a hole they could not climb out of on Saturday night as they fell to the Moose 4-1 at the MTS Centre. Simon Gamache scored on a power-play at 37 seconds of the third period to give Milwaukee their lone score on the night. Milwaukee put only 13 shots on goal Friday night, but converted on four of those shots and Pekka Rinne made 24 saves to lead the Admirals to a 4-1 win over the Moose. Second period goals by Chris Durno and Chaz Johnson broke a 1-1 tie and Gamache's short-handed tally in the third period sealed the win. The Admirals topped the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-3 at the Copps Coliseum on Wednesday Night. Paul Brown broke a 3-3 tie with four minutes to go in the game and help the Admirals clinch a playoff berth. On Monday night Rinne stopped all 23 shots thrown his way and Gamache's goal at the 8:36 mark of the first period propelled the Admirals to a 1-0 win over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights.

FIRST THINGS FIRST... After being recalled by the Admirals on Tuesday night and playing in just his third AHL game, right wing Chaz Johnson scored his first AHL goal Friday night, helping the Admirals defeat the Moose. The Montreal, PQ native is no stranger to lighting the lamp, however, as he has 22 goals in 61 games this year with the Rockford IceHogs of the United Hockey League. Johnson also has 20 assists and a +11 rating for the Hogs.

POWERING UP... With a power-play goal last night, the Admirals have now scored 101 on the season, putting them five shy of the club record of 106 set back in the 1993-94 season. Milwaukee is 101 of 505 on the year, good for a 20 % conversion rate and third in AHL. In addition, Darren Haydar's 17 power-play tallies are just one shy of the team record of 18, set by Brian Dobbin, also in 93-94. However, the Ads have also given up 20 short-handed tallies, which ties the club mark originally set in the 1978-79 season.

TURNING TIDES... Late last season and earlier this year former Admiral and 2004 Calder Cup MVP Wade Flaherty had the Admirals mark, stopping 118 of 122 shots in three games versus his former team. However, the Ads fortunes have changed against their old mate as of late. On February 17th Milwaukee potted three goals on Flaherty in the first 16 minutes of the game in their 7-4 win over the Moose and Saturday night the Terrace, BC native surrendered four goals on just 13 Admiral shots in Milwaukee's 4-1 win. Flaherty's record versus Milwaukee since helping the Admirals Capture the AHL Championship stands at 2-2-1.

HIT THE ROAD JACK... Due in part to the Bradley Center playing host to the NCAA Frozen Four and the set-up involved with it, the Admirals play nine of their last 11 games on the road, including the current five-game road trip that began last Wednesday. Of those nine games the Admirals will play in seven different cities, ranging from Winnipeg, Manitoba to San Antonio, TX, after not playing a game outside of Wisconsin or Illinois from February 11th until March 18th. The trip does not seem as daunting as it once may have looked, as the Admirals have notched an 18-11-4-2 road record this season.

THE CLINCHER... Wednesday night's win over Hamilton clinched a berth in the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs for the Admirals. The Ads are currently tops in the West Division, one point ahead of Houston, but the Aeros do have two games in hand. If the playoff were to start today the Admirals would host the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, who finished fourth in the division, in a first-round best-of-seven series.

BROWN IS IN STYLE...After being held with-out a goal or an assist in his first 25 games this season, forward Paul Brown has had a hot hand as of late, posting three goals and an assist in his last eight games. The highlight came last Wednesday night versus Hamilton when he notched the game winning-goal with 4:00 left in the third period. The Edmonton, ALTA native has nine points (6g-3a) and 135 PIMs in 53 career games with Milwaukee.

OVER THE AIR AND ON THE WEB... The Admirals have a new flagship radio station this season in Milwaukee's ESPN Radio 1510 AM (days)/1290 AM (nights). Aaron Sims will call all of the hard-hitting end-to-end action. In addition, the team has a one-hour hockey magazine dubbed "Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice" that airs every Tuesday from 6-7 pm on ESPN Radio. Fans can watch all Admirals games, home and on the road, live on the internet via B2 Networks. Simply go to the Admirals Website at www.milwaukeeadmirals.com
