No-hitter by Quezada lifts Yankees
May 25, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Battle Creek right-hander Elvys Quezada fired a no-hitter to lead the Battle Creek Yankees past the host South Bend Silver Hawks 7-0 Monday night in Midwest League baseball at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
There had been just one no-hitter in franchise history - a seven-inning effort by Carlos Hernandez in the second game of a double-header against visiting West Michigan on May 28, 2000.
Quezada (1-3) had lost three straight after a no-decision in his first start of the season. He fanned 10 - including the final two batters he faced. He walked just four. Quezada was mobbed by his teammates at home plate after the final out.
Eric Duncan slugged a three-run double to highlight a five-run fifth inning as the Yankees thumped the Eastern Division-leading Silver Hawks for the fourth time in five meetings this season. Battle Creek pounded out 15 hits in the win. Hector Made and Bryce Kartler had three hits each to lead the way.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Duncan reached on a two-out error and scored on a single by John Urick. Estee Harris and Made led off the second with back-to-back singles, but Harris was picked off second and Made was then caught stealing. Battle Creek put runners on first and third with one out in the fourth, but failed to score.
Singles by Kartler and Omir Santos, plus a walk to Melky Cabrera, loaded the bases for the Yankees with no outs in the fifth. Erold Andrus laced an RBI single for a 2-0 lead, then Duncan smashed a bases-clearing double to make it 5-0. Duncan took third on a fly out and scored on a groundout by Enrique Cruz for a 6-0 lead.
The Yankees loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth - on a single by Made, a double by Kartler and a single by Santos - but managed just one run and a 7-0 lead as a double play and groundout ended the inning.
The series continues with a Tuesday morning game. First pitch is 11:30 a.m. EDT - 10:30 a.m. South Bend time.
