Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs utilized a strong penalty kill and outstanding performance from goaltender Bailey Brkin on Saturday night, coming out on top of a physical contest with the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings, 3-2.
Spokane's Adam Beckman opened the scoring at 3:44 in the first period, capitalizing on an Egor Arbuzov stretch pass from behind his own blue line to spring loose for a breakaway. The rookie forward chipped a shot over Edmonton goaltender Dylan Myskiw's left shoulder to make it 1-0 Chiefs.
Edmonton responded just after the media timeout of the first period as Brett Kemp put his team-leading sixth goal of the season past Spokane's Brkin.
The Chiefs regained the lead five minutes later as Jake McGrew fired a rocket from the left circle on the power play, blowing by Myskiw to the far post to make it 2-1. Ty Smith earned his second assist of the night on the play.
After the first intermission, Edmonton once again tied the game as team captain Trey Fix-Wolansky caught the Chiefs up ice, sneaking behind for a breakaway score.
Spokane jumped ahead for good with just over five minutes left in the second as Eli Zummack forced a turnover in the neutral zone and forced the puck to Luke Toporowski on the right side. Toporowski drove behind the net before spinning around for a perfect feed to Zummack waiting netfront, who promptly put the Chiefs on top 3-2.
Brkin finished with 28 saves on 30 Oil King shots, earning second star honors. Myskiw was 29-of-32. The Chiefs ended the night 1-for-3 on the power play 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
