Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HARTFORD, Conn - Forward Mats Zuccarello recorded a hat trick, Jeremy Williams added two goals and the Hartford Wolf Pack defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 7-1 in Hartford on Sunday night. The loss snaps the Wolf Pack's nine-game winless streak and improves their record to 4-8-2-1. The Sound Tigers finish the four-in-five game weekend with an even 2-2 record and drop to 5-7-0-0.
The Sound Tigers lineup was somewhat different from the one that beat Hartford 4-1 last night with Justin DiBenedetto, Dustin Kohn and Jean Bourbeau all out due to injury. Hartford took advantage midway through the first following a Jeremy Yablonski tripping penalty when Mats Zuccarello fired a shot past Sound Tigers goalie Nathan Lawson to put the Wolf Pack on top 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Hartford notched their second power play goal of the period on Jeremy Williams' one-timer from the top of the left circle. With four seconds remaining in the period, Mats Zuccarello scored his second of the period. Zuccarello was camped out in front of the Bridgeport net, and Tim Kennedy fed him from behind the net to earn his third assist of the period as Zuccarello knocked the puck past Lawson to give Hartford a 3-0 lead heading to the first intermission.
Hartford continued their attack in the second when Zuccarello scored his third goal of the game for the hat trick at 5:38, also on the power play. The Wolf Pack increased their lead on an odd-man rush when Chris McKelvie slid a pass across the slot to Kelsey Tessier who deflected it past a sliding Lawson to make it 5-0 at the 12:38 mark of the middle period.
The Wolf Pack added to their lead just 1:48 into the third period. With Nathan Lawson on his back in the crease, Jeremy Williams found the loose puck in front and lifted over Lawson for his second goal of the game. Robin Figren spoiled Chad Johnson's shutout bid with his sharp angle shot at 11:43 of the final period, which also came on the power play. Dane Byers scored his third goal of the season and rounded out the scoring with just over six minutes remaining, and Hartford skated away with a strong 7-1 victory over the Sound Tigers.
Chad Johnson made 24 saves to earn his third win of the season. Lawson made 24 saves for the Sound Tigers and allowed all seven Wolf Pack goals.
The Sound Tigers hit the road next week and travel to Charlotte for the first games in franchise history against the Checkers. The two-game series will begin Thursday at 7 p.m.
