Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans once again came up short to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 2-1 decision tonight at The Blue Cross Arena. The game was the second this weekend between the Amerks and the Pens, and the second of four between the clubs this season. Rochester falls to a record of 7-6-1-0, and are now 1-5-0-0 on home ice.
Defenseman Mike Caruso scored Rochester's lone goal, his first of the season, and Kenndal McArdle and Michal Repik each recorded assists this evening. Repik's assist continues his seven-game point streak and also keeps him atop of the league's assist table. Netminder Jacob Markstrom saved 22 of 24 shots in the losing effort.
Dustin Jeffrey (1+0) and Ryan Craig (1+0) were the two top performers for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tonight. Each scored one goal apiece, with Craig netting the game-winner. Goaltender Brad Thiessen made 19 saves on 20 shots to secure a Pens victory.
The game remained scoreless until 12:36 in the second period when Jeffrey scored his fourth of the season to put the Amerks behind by one. Eric Tangradi (0+1) dished the puck to Brett Sterling (0+1), who made his way up the ice into the Rochester zone on a two on one opportunity. Opting not to shoot, Sterling sent a cross ice pass to Jeffrey, who one-timed the puck into the top of the net past Markstrom.
The Amerks responded less than a minute later when Caruso received his first point of the season by sliding the puck past Thiessen from a point shot at 13:12.
The tie was broken by the Penguins with just minutes remaining in the final period. At 18:10, Craig picked up the rebound and wristed it past Markstrom for his second goal of the season. Nick Johnson (0+1) and Chris Collins (0+1) received the helpers. Unfortunately, Rochester was unable to force an overtime period, which resulted in a final 2-1 decision.
The Amerks return to action on Wednesday, November 10th for a midweek tilt with the Binghamton Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will be the first of eight meetings between the longtime geographic rivals and can be heard live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
