Charlotte took command in the second period on Sunday, and held off the BEARS for a 4-2 win at Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte.
Neither team would score in the first period, with the BEARS firing 12 shots at Charlotte's Mike Murphy. Dany Sabourin stopped all five that came his way, including shots generated from three different Checkers power plays. But in the second period, the goals would come at a quick pace for the home team. Jerome Samson would start it off, scoring a power play tally just 40 seconds into the second period. The five-on-three goal gave the Checkers a 1-0 lead. Zac Dalpe would make it 2-0 Charlotte at the 2:35 mark of the period, scoring a five-on-four power play from Zach Boychuk and Drayson Bowman. The Checkers added to the lead a short time later at 7:32 when Chris Terry fired a shot from near the right point that beat goaltender Dany Sabourin over his left shoulder. The goal for Terry was his seventh of the campaign, and Charlotte led 3-0.
HERSHEY would rally in the third period, on a pair of power play goals from Kyle Greentree. Greentree got the BEARS on the scoreboard at 2:58 with his fourth goal of the season, and followed with his second of the night at 11:40. The BEARS nearly tied the game late in the third when defenseman Dylan Yeo fired a shot from the high slot that rang off the left goal post. HERSHEY pulled Sabourin in favor of an extra attacker in the game's final minute, and Samson potted the empty netter at 19:55 to round out the scoring. Sabourin dropped his fourth game in five decisions, while Checkers goaltender Mike Murphy evened his record at 3-3-2.
BEARS Radio Network Three Stars of the game:
1. Jerome Samson (Two goals)
2. Kyle Greentree (Two third period power play goals)
3. Chris Terry (Game-winner in the second period)
Notes: The BEARS remain in North Carolina for a game Tuesday against the Checkers at Time Warner Arena. Faceoff is at 7:00 p.m. Lawrence Nycholat missed the game with an upper body injury, and is listed as day-to-day. Center Marcus Johansson made his HERSHEY debut in the game. Johansson had a goal in six games played with Washington this season. The BEARS return home Friday night to face the Toronto Marlies at Giant Center. Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. start are available at the Giant Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
