New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Tim Torres drove a deep fly ball over the head of center fielder Tyler Colvin with one out and the bases loaded, giving the New Orleans Zephyrs a 2-1 win and completing a four-game sweep of the Iowa Cubs on Sunday afternoon.

The sweep was the first at Zephyr Field since May 2008, sending the Z's into the All-Star break on a high note.

With starters Adalberto Mendez and Alberto Cabrera locked in a duel, Jesus Merchan broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning when he singled up the middle to score Mike Cervenak from second and put New Orleans on top, 1-0.

Tyler Colvin greeted reliever Frank Mata by sending the third pitch of the seventh inning over the right field wall to tie the game.

With the game still tied in the ninth, Scott Maine (2-3) walked Jorge Padilla and Jesus Merchan to lead off the inning. Pinch-hitter Brad Davis laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Maine threw wildly to first, allowing Davis to reach.

Torres then sent a deep fly ball over the head of Colvin, giving the Zephyrs their third walk-off victory of the seven-game homestand, during which they went 5-2.

New Orleans outhit Iowa 9-3, but stranded 11 baserunners on the afternoon.

Mariano Gomez (2-3) received the victory as he pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Mendez.

Mendez retired the first 13 batters he faced, losing a no-hit bid on a one-out double by Ty Wright in the fifth. He finished with six scoreless innings, and has now worked 18 innings against Iowa this season without allowing an earned run.

Cabrera scattered five hits over five scoreless frames for Iowa.

After a three-day break for the All-Star Game, the Zephyrs begin the second half with a 12-game road trip before returning home on July 26.
