Zephyrs Shutout Redbirds 2-0

April 11, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Zephyrs shut out the Memphis Redbirds for the second consecutive day with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday at Zephyr Field.

The Zephyrs capitalized on some defensive misfortune by Memphis to score the game's only runs in the second inning. Matt Dominguez singled and Chase Lambin walked to lead off the frame.

With two outs and runners on second and third, Kevin Mattison's high pop up on the infield was misjudged by Memphis third baseman Zack Cox, dropping along the third base line and allowing both runners to score.

The lead stood for the rest of the day, with Brad Hand (1-0) fanning 10 batters over six innings to earn his first Triple-A victory.

Hand walked the bases loaded with one out in the third, and fell behind 3-0 to Amaury Cazana before recovering to notch his sixth strikeout. Hand escaped the inning unscathed by getting Cedric Hunter to fly out to center.

Gary Glover protected the lead by striking out three over two relief innings, and Chris Hatcher got his first save to close out the victory.

In 70 innings pitched this season, Zephyr hurlers have only allowed the opposition to score in seven, giving the team a Pacific Coast League-leading 0.90 ERA.

Brian Broderick (0-2) took the loss for Redbirds allowing two earned runs on six hits.

After winning on Opening Day, the Redbirds have dropped six straight, eclipsing their longest losing streak of 2011 by one game.

New Orleans will look for a sweep to close out the series against Memphis on Thursday at 7pm. Left-hander Wade LeBlanc gets the start for the Zephyrs, against Redbirds right-hander Joe Kelly.
