Syracuse, NY (October 19, 2007) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that they have named center Zenon Konopka as their team captain for the 2007-08 season. The club also announced that defenseman Dan Smith and right wing Steven Goertzen will serve as alternates at home games and centers Andrew Murray and Derek MacKenzie will wear the 'A' during road games.
Konopka, 26, becomes the ninth full-time team captain in franchise history (Dane Jackson, 1994-95, Mark Wotton, 1995-99, Brian Bunin, 1999-00, Mike Gaul, 2000-01, Sean Pronger, 2001-02, David Ling 2002-03, Darrell Scoville, 2003-04, Jamie Pushor, 2004-07.
Konopka appeared in 20 games with Syracuse last season notching 9 goals, 11 assists and 70 penalty minutes. He also played in 6 games with Columbus last year, tallying 20 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 42 games with Portland of the AHL last year, scoring 11 goals, 24 assists and 97 penalty minutes. A native of Niagra Falls, Ontario, Konopka was acquired by Columbus on January 26, 2007 along with left wing Curtis Glencross and a conditional 7th round pick in either 2007 or 2008 in exchange for right wing Joe Motzko, center Mark Hartigan and a 4th round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
