Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK - Twelve different Admirals appeared on the scoresheet as Norfolk (2-3-0-0) upended the Binghamton Senators (1-3-0-0) by a 5-1 score on Friday night at Norfolk Scope. Kyle Wanvig (1G, 2A) and Justin Taylor (1G, 1A) led the way for Norfolk with multi-point performances.
The Admirals jumped out to the lead early as Vladimir Mihalik scored his first pro goal. The 6'8" defenseman collected a rebound at the left circle and sent a slap shot top shelf, stick-side on Binghamton goaltender Brian Elliott at 4:49.
The lead doubled early in the second period when winger Norm Milley netted his first of the season. Milley had a partial breakaway on Elliott and sent a backhander on net. Elliott got a piece of the shot with his glove, but not enough as the puck trickled over the goal line at 3:24.
Norfolk took a three-goal lead eight minutes later while shorthanded. Karl Stewart broke in two-on-one and sent a wrister from the left circle top shelf at 11:13.
The Senators scored their only goal of the evening just over a minute later. As Ryan Munce attempted to cover a Greg Maudlin shot at the right post, Cody Bass batted at the puck, sending a shot off Munce's right leg and into the net at 12:30.
The Admirals salted the game away in the third period. Kyle Wanvig tapped in a Dan Jancevski shot for a power play goal at 5:02. The home opener crowd of 5,627 came to their feet a fifth time when Justin Taylor sent a rebound past Elliott from the right circle at 6:52.
Ryan Munce (18 shots, 17 saves) picked up his second straight victory. Munce now has the second-best goals-against average in the AHL ( 1.30) and the second-best save percentage (.952) in the AHL. Brian Elliott (23 shots, 18 saves) got the loss through 46:52. Jeff Glass (8 shots, 8 saves) finished the game with 13:08 of play and did not factor into the decision.
Norfolk was 1-7 on the power play. Binghamton was 0-2.
