Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rosemont, Ill.- A rivalry was born on Friday as the Rockford IceHogs met up with the Chicago Wolves for the first time. Unfortunately for the IceHogs, they didn't get the first laugh. Chicago slipped by Rockford 5-4 in overtime to end Rockford three game winning streak at the All-State Arena.
A wild first period featured six combined goals and 50 combined penalty minutes. Chicago jumped out of the gates quickly with two early goals. Defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski began the scoring at 4:08 when he blasted his first goal of the season past Corey Crawford. The Wolves lead was then extended to 2-0 after winger Jordan Lavallee finished off a 2-on-1 breakaway with Joey Crabb and ripped in his first of two tallies on the night at 5:06.
Rockford responded with four unanswered goals in the first period to take a 4-2 advantage. Winger Troy Brouwer began the IceHogs barrage when he shelved his first goal of the season past Fred Brathwaite at 7:51 on the power play. Center Martin St. Pierre then went to work on the advantage at he knocked in a rebound for his second tally of the campaign at 7:51.
Center Jake Dowell put the IceHogs on top 3-2 when he converted a short-handed breakaway for his first goal of the young season at 13:33. Defenseman Prestin Ryan finished off the offensive surge for Rockford when he slapped in a rebound for his second lamp lighter of the season at 14:50.
Chicago countered in the second period to tie the game at 4-4. Steve Martins' cross ice feed deflected off of Hogs defenseman Jordan Hendry's skate and past Crawford at 8:33 of the middle period. Chicago tied the game with another power-play goal at 16:43 from Lavallee.
Neither team tallied in the third period forcing an overtime in which the IceHogs played nearly the entire frame short-handed. Chicago finally capitalized when Jason Krog flipped in a rebound past Crawford with just :24 remaining in the extra session.
The IceHogs were outshot 33-22 in the game including getting outshot 27-9 after the first period. Rockford finished the night 3-for-11 on the power play while the Wolves finished 4-for-12.
