Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Eric Young, Jr. hit a "walk-off" two-run single in the ninth inning Sunday, lifting the Gwinnett Braves (33-35) to a 6-5 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (34-36) at Coolray Field. Gwinnett avoided a sweep of the three-game series with their eighth "walk-off" win this season.
Young's bouncer into right field was the only hit of the inning against Pawtucket reliever Pat Light (BS, 1; L, 0-1). The right-hander walked Cedric Hunter to open the bottom of the ninth, and Daniel Castro moved Hunter to second with a sacrifice bunt. Light then walked a pair of pinch hitters, Todd Cunningham and Christian Bethancourt, to load the bases and set the stage for Young's heroics.
Gwinnett matched their largest come-from-behind win of the year, rallying from a four-run, 5-1 deficit. Right-handed starter Alex White fell behind by that score with five runs over 4.0 innings of work, including a run in the first inning, three in the second and another in the fourth. He allowed six hits and walked five while striking out four.
Designated hitter Carlos Peguero drove in three of the first four runs as part of his 2-for-3 afternoon. He finished the series 7-for-12 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. Jackie Bradley, Jr. drove in another run with a single in the second inning that put Pawtucket in front 4-1. Quintin Berry accounted for their fifth run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
However, Gwinnett right-handed relievers Kanekoa Texeira and Carlos Fisher shut out Pawtucket for the remaining 5.0 innings to give the G-Braves an opportunity to make their comeback. Texeira struck out the side in the fifth and ultimately allowed two hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Fisher (W, 1-2) tossed a scoreless top of the ninth with one hit and one strikeout.
Both of the G-Braves' first two runs came as the result of sacrifice flyouts. They first scored in the opening inning as Jose Peraza legged out his team-leading fifth triple and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Joey Terdoslavich. Peraza hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to drive in Jose Yepez.
Pawtucket right-handed starter Jess Todd needed 58 pitches (45 strikes) to get through his 6.0 innings in a no-decision. He limited the G-Braves to two runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Hunter helped plant the seeds for the comeback with his team-leading 15th double of the year that began a one-out rally in the seventh against right-handed reliever Noe Ramirez (H, 1). Hunter scored when Castro hit a ball in front of home plate that catcher Matt Spring threw errantly to first base, cutting the Pawtucket advantage to 5-3.
Adonis Garcia pulled Gwinnett to within one run in the eighth inning on an RBI single off Ramirez that scored Terdoslavich. The base hit extended Garcia's hitting streak to 10 games, matching his longest streak of the season.
Ramirez allowed two runs - one earned - on three hits and a walk over 1.1 innings for Pawtucket. Light pitched 1.0 inning with two runs allowed on two hits and three walks.
For Gwinnett, Young finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Peraza went 1-for-2 a triple, run scored and RBI. Hunter added a 1-for-3 game including a double, walk and two runs scored.
Bradley and Berry joined Peguero with multi-hit days for Pawtucket. Bradley finished 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Berry went 3-for-3 and also had a walk, RBI and run scored.
The Gwinnett Braves will begin a four-game series against the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, at 6:35 p.m. Monday at Coolray Field. Left-hander Manny Banuelos (5-2, 2.29 ERA) will get the start for Gwinnett opposite right-hander Chris Volstad (5-2, 3.43 ERA) of Indianapolis. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6 p.m.
