Young's Three Hits Help Hot Rods Top Beloit, 7-3
July 21, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Beloit, Wisc. - Ty Young's torrid month of July continued on Monday afternoon, as he homered and collected three hits to help lead the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) to a 7-3 victory over the Beloit Snappers (Oakland Athletics). The Hot Rods now head for Bowling Green Ballpark to open a six-game homestand.
Young kick-started the top of the second inning for Bowling Green with a single. Two outs later, James Harris lashed a single to left field, and Alexander Simon walked to load the bases. Elias Torres followed with a double to left field, plating both Young and Harris to give the Hot Rods a 2-0 lead.
Five consecutive singles by Bowling Green in the fifth helped stretch the lead to 5-0, and they were all hit with two outs. Juniel Querecuto started the surge with a single. Kean Wong would follow with a hit up the middle, and Oscar Hernandez then drove home Querecuto with a single to left field. Young and Darryl George would add singles of their own to drive home Wong and Hernandez.
Beloit would trim the lead to three in the bottom of the seventh. With BA Vollmuth aboard, Luis Baez hit a two-run home run to left-center field, cutting the Bowling Green advantage to 5-2.
Momentum would be quickly regained by the Hot Rods, as Young led off the eighth inning with a solo blast to right field. It was his seventh home run of the season, five of which have come since the start of the second half. After walks to Julian Ridings and Harris, Simon would single home Ridings to expand the lead to 7-2.
The Snappers would add a run in the eighth, but Beloit came no closer in the 7-2 triumph for the Hot Rods. Bruedlin Suero (2-2) worked into the seventh inning to earn the win. He struck out five without issuing a free pass.
Young is now batting .359 (23-64) in the month of July with three doubles, a triple, and four home runs. He hadn't hit more than one home run in a month before this July surge.
Dylan Covey (4-9) started and received the loss for Beloit. He was tagged for five runs in six innings.
The Hot Rods now travel home for Tuesday's off-day, and will open up a six-game homestand at Bowling Green Ballpark on Wednesday against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Minnesota Twins). First pitch on a Meijer Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT, and gates will open up at 6 p.m. For tickets to any Hot Rods game, or for more information, fans can visit BGHotRods.com, call 270-901-2121, or visit the Bowling Green Ballpark box office.
