Peoria Chiefs News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Peoria Chiefs rallied for two late runs but left the tying run at third in the eighth in a 5-4 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday afternoon. The loss ends the season-long roadtrip at 4-6 while the Chiefs are now 17-13 in the second half and 54-45 overall. A six-game homestand starts Wednesday at Dozer Park and 13 of the next 19 games are at home.

South Bend jumped out to an early lead against Chiefs starter Arturo Reyes. Chuck Taylor was hit by a pitch with one out and scored when Daniel Palka doubled off the wall in right field for his league-leading 71st RBI of the season.

The Chiefs got to Sean Furney in the top of the second and tied the game. Justin Ringo led off with a single to center and Ronald Castillo walked. Luis Perez blooped a single to center to load the bases. Richy Pedroza tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center. Anderw Velazquez robbed Rafael Medina deep in the hole at shortstop for the second out and a flyout ended the inning with the game tied.

South Bend took the lead in the second on a wild pitch and extended the advantage in the third. Palka tripled off the top of the right-field wall and scored on a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead.

Castillo led off the top of the fourth with a double to left and moved to third on a single from Perez. Pedroza singled to center to cut the deficit to 3-2 but Medina hit into a double play and Michael Schulze grounded out to end the inning.

South Bend extended their lead in bottom of the inning against Reyes. Jaime Westbrook singled and Michael Perez doubled him home for a 4-2 lead. Perez advanced to third on the throw home from right field and scored on a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 Hawks lead.

The Chiefs bats stayed quiet until the eighth. With two down, Castillo legged out his first triple of the season and Will Leconte walked Perez. Pedroza just missed a game-tying home run off the top of the wall in left field and settled for a two-run triple. With the Chiefs down 5-4, Medina flew out to right and Peoria went in order in the top of the ninth.

Reyes (6-6) allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings in the loss. He struck out a career-high nine and did not issue a walk while hitting a batter. Jhonny Polanco struck out one and walked one in a scoreless inning. Steve Sabatino struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect inning.
