Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Beloit, Wisc. - Armando Araiza homered and drove in three runs, but it was not enough for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) on Saturday night. The Beloit Snappers (Oakland Athletics) rallied from 3-0 and 4-3 deficits to beat the Hot Rods in the opener of a three-game set, 5-4.
Araiza put the Hot Rods in front with a two-out blast in the first inning. His eighth home run of the season hit off the scoreboard in left-center field, and Bowling Green led 1-0 after one inning of play.
It appeared a routine inning was in order in the third, but Juniel Querecuto and Kean Wong hit back-to-back singles, and Araiza drove a ball to center field that smashed off the batter's eye. Both Querecuto and Wong scored on the two-run double, and the lead was expanded to 3-0.
Beloit used back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning to get on the board. With two outs, Tyler Marincov hit a homer to left field, and BA Vollmuth followed suit by hitting his nearly in the same area. The rally cut the Hot Rods lead to 3-2.
The game was tied in the fifth when Justin Higley singled home Melvin Mercedes in the fifth, but the Hot Rods would quickly answered as Darryl George led off the sixth inning with a double. He would come home when Elias Torres singled to center, and Bowling Green had the lead back.
Unfortunately that lead would not last long, as Beloit would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Luis Baez led off with a walk, and would come around to score when Marincov followed with a triple to center field. Vollmuth put the Snappers in front with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Beloit had their first lead of 5-4.
The Snappers' bullpen held that advantage, and they helped give Hunter Adkins (1-3) the victory. He allowed four runs in six frames, as Bobby Wahl recorded his fourth save of the season.
D.J. Slaton made his Bowling Green debut and allowed three runs in five innings with five strikeouts. He was relieved by Stone Speer (5-2) who took the loss.
The Hot Rods will try to get back to the winning side of the standings column on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT, and the Pepsi Pre-Game Show begins at 1:45 p.m. CT on the radio home of the Hot Rods, 1340 WBGN - The Ticket. The Hot Rods return to town on Wednesday, July 23.
