Indianapolis Indians News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Left-hander Shane Youman scattered just three hits over 6.2 scoreless innings for his third straight road win as Indianapolis defeated Columbus, 5-1, in the series opener before a crowd of 7,292 Tuesday evening at Cooper Stadium.
The Indians improve to 44-33 on the season, 20-19 on the road and end a five-game skid, while the Clippers slip to 35-43 overall and 18-23 at home with their 15th setback in the month of June.
Youman (6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 4 SO), who held Columbus to an 0-for-14 clip with runners on base, improved to 4-6 with the win. The 27-year-old is now 4-1 with a 1.71 ERA in seven starts on the road, but 0-5 with a 7.81 ERA in eight starts at Victory Field. The New Iberia, La., native is also 3-1 over his last four starts after winning just once in his first 11 outings.
Indianapolis wasted no time scoring in the series opener. RF Don Kelly led off with a single to center before SS Brian Bixler rocked an RBI triple to right. CF Matt Kata followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The Indians added three insurance runs in the sixth. Bixler opened the inning with a base knock to center and came plateward moments later on 1B Brad Eldred's double to left. LF Michael Ryan followed with an RBI single to left before 3B Russ Johnson capped frame with an RBI double to center.
Columbus plated its only run of the night in the eighth when 3B Kory Casto and LF Michael Restovich tagged back-to-back singles after 2B Bernie Castro reached on a fielder's choice.
Bixler (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Eldred (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) registered multi-hit performances for the Tribe, while Restovich (2-for-4, 1 RBI) paced the Clippers offense.
Columbus RHP Emiliano Fruto (5.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 3-4.
Indianapolis RHP Franquelis Osoria (1.2 IP, 1 SO) redeemed himself after a tough Toledo series by stranding three inherited runners for his seventh save of the season.
The IL West Division rivals continue their four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. LHP Michael Tejera is scheduled to start for Indians, while LHP John Lannan is expected to get the nod for Clippers.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
