Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Ben Zobrist's two-out, bases clearing double in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed the Bulls past the Rochester Red Wings as Durham won, 7-5 in a see-saw battle on Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls entered the eighth inning down 5-4 but singles from Chris Richard and Joel Guzman put two-men on base. RHP Bobby Korecky made a throwing error on a pick-off attempt, allowing the runners to move into scoring position and forcing the Wings to intentionally walk Jason Pridie, who was making his home debut as a Durham Bull, to load the bases. With two outs, Ben Zobrist came through with a double off the Blue Monster to drive in the three runners and give the Bulls a 7-5 lead.
RHP Julio DePaula (4-4) took the loss as he was charged with two of the three runs, and RHP Seth McClung (1-3) earned the win after Brian Buscher grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the eighth inning. RHP Chad Orvella earned his ninth save of the season after retiring the side with a fly out and two strikeouts in the ninth inning.
The Wings took the 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning after entering the inning down 4-2. Matt Tolbert singled and former Bull Darnell McDonald doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Garrett Jones hit into an RBI groundout to score Tolbert and an RBI single from Glenn Williams scored McDonald. Williams advanced to second on the play on a fielding error by Chris Richard, and Brian Buscher followed with an RBI single to score him and give the Wings a 5-4 advantage. Despite the rough inning RHP Mitch Talbot pitched seven innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
The Bulls made the score 4-2 when Ben Zobrist and Elliot Johnson led the fifth inning off with singles and Justin Ruggiano brought them all home with a home run to center field. Rochester starter RHP Matt Garza left after the inning, allowing four runs and ten hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
The Wings started the scoring in the top of the second inning with a two-RBI double from Tommy Watkins for an early 2-0 lead. The Bulls cut the lead in half though in the bottom half of the second inning with back-to-back doubles. Jorge Velandia hit a liner to left field and Jason Pridie flied to center to score Velandia.
The Bulls and Red Wings will meet again on Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
