Lancaster Stormers News Release
Shane Youman, supported by three early homers, pitched seven scoreless innings on Wednesday evening, pitching the Newark Bears to an 8-3 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
With the loss, the Barnstormers dropped out of first place for just the second day in the second half.
Youman (2-1, 4-5) yielded two hits while walking four and striking out seven. The only trouble he found was in the first inning. The former Barnstormers lefty walked Vic Gutierrez with one out. Bryant Nelson rapped a single through the hole on the right side, sending Gutierrez to second. Aaron Herr hit a smash off Youman which kicked to the third base side of the mound. Youman chased the ball down and made an accurate throw to first base, even while his back foot slipped, to get Herr. Reggie Taylor walked to load the bases, but Youman struck out Ryan Mulhern to get out of the threat.
The Barnstormers managed to advance only one more runner into scoring position during Youman's tenure in the game.
Tim Raines, Jr. was walked on five pitches by Wayne Franklin (0-2), then stole second and third to start the Newark first. Kennard Jones also walked. Sandy Madera grounded into a 6-4-3 double play as a run scored. Carl Everett reignited the inning with a solo home run drilled into the screen above the left field wall. Brian Barton walked, and Isaiah Kaaihue belted a two-run homer just to the left of the batter's eye for a 4-0 lead.
James Cooper opened the second with a double down the left field line and scored on a single to center by Raines. Kennard Jones went the other way, dropping a two-run homer over the left field wall, as Newark pushed the lead to 7-0.
Franklin settled down and allowed only two singles over the next 3 2/3 innings. Newark tacked on an eighth run on three singles off Sean Thompson in the sixth.
Lancaster finally got on the board with three runs in the eighth off Brian Holliday. Josh Johnson lashed a single into right center to start the inning and stood at second with two outs. Nelson knocked a single into center to score Johnson. Herr yanked an RBI double into the left field corner and took third on a throwing error by shortstop Randy Gress on a play at the plate. Herr scored when Reggie Taylor smashed a single up the middle, cutting the lead to the 8-3 final.
The series concludes on Thursday evening as Josh Hall (10-5) takes the hill against Kelvin Villa (2-6). Game time is 6:35.
NOTES: Herr's double stretched his hitting streak to eight games...Johnson has reached base on six of 10 plate appearances since being reactivated...Newark has hit seven homers in the two games of the series...Coming in, the Barnstormers had allowed only 31 on the road all season...Octavio Martinez did not play...He has a 10-game streak.
