Shane Youman pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just two singles, and Carl Everett, Isaiah Kaaihue and Kennard Jones each collected a home run as the Newark Bears defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 8-3 on Wednesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Bears jumped all over Barnstormers starter Wayne Franklin (0-2) for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tim Raines, Jr. led off the game by drawing a walk and quickly stole second and third base. Raines, Jr., who recorded three hits and scored twice, came home on a double play to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Everett kept the inning going with a long solo homer to left field, his 11th homer of the season, to make a two run advantage. Following a Brian Barton walk, Kaaihue smacked a two-run shot to straight-away centerfield and it was 4-0 Newark. It was the third homer in the last two games for Kaaihue and his fourth of the season.
James Cooper. who played in his first game in over two weeks, doubled to left and scored on a single from Raines, Jr.. Jones took a three ball, two strike pitch from Franklin out the opposite way for a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, and Newark held a commanding 7-0 lead.
Youman (2-1) pitched his best game since being acquired in a trade with the York Revolution three weeks ago. The lefty surrendered a single to Bryant Nelson in the first inning, but didn't allow another hit until Michael Woods singled in the seventh inning. Youman struck out seven and walked four in the win. The Bears added another run in the home sixth inning, when Cooper scored on a fielder's choice by Jones, his third RBI of the game, increasing their lead to 8-0. Lancaster scored three runs in the top of the eighth off Bears reliever Brian "Doc" Holliday, with Nelson, Aaron Herr and Reggie Taylor delivering RBI hits in the frame.
The Bears look for the series sweep as they face the Barnstormers in the finale on Thursday. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the gates of the 'Den opening at 5:35 p.m. Thursday night means "Thirsty Thursday," presented by Budweiser and Pepsi.
