Bears Go to Bat Against Pancreatic Cancer

August 18, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL) - Newark Bears News Release

(Newark, N.J., Aug. 18, 2010) - On August 29th the Newark Bears will host hundreds of fans in support of pancreatic cancer research as they honor two leaders in the fight against the deadliest of high mortality cancers.

Dr. Robert Fine of New York-Presbyterian, voted one of the top three thought leaders in pancreatic cancer research, and Dr. Stephen Schrieibman of Morristown Memorial, New Jersey's leading advocate of Dr. Fine's regimes, will both be on hand for the game.

"You can't find two medical professionals more passionate about extending the lives of the 42,000 plus people who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year," said Joe

Grasso, a patient in the care of both doctors. "Despite their efforts, however, 76% of pancreatic cancer patients never make it beyond one year from diagnosis."

Given the fact that the need is so great and so little money is now allocated toward pancreatic cancer research, Newark Mayor Corey Booker has offered to be on hand to emphasize the urgency of this cause. Fans will then take the field to release hundreds of purple balloons, purple being the official color in support of pancreatic cancer awareness and research. The national anthem will be sung by the daughter of a patient under the care of doctors Fine and Schreibman.

The Bears will be hosting the York Revolution with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. Fans purchasing tickets in advance of the game will pay just $12 for admission and giveaways, including a purple keepsake bear, purple bam-bam noisemakers and purple lollypops. There will also be a giant bouncy castle for the enjoyment of the children throughout the game. Tickets are available by calling 201-825-3489 or sending your request to [email protected]

The Newark Bears are a member of the eight-team Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. For ticket or sponsorship information, call 973-848-1000, or visit www.newarkbears.com.
