AtL Lancaster Stormers

York Takes Nailbiter In Series Opener

August 13, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers are back to their tense down-to-the-wire ways.

Lancaster loaded the bases in the ninth inning but could not pick up a game-tying hit, instead dropping a 3-2 decision to the York Revolution in front of 5,283 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The Barnstormers' lead in the Freedom Division has been cut back to one game over the Revolution and just two over the surging Somerset Patriots.

Starter Wayne Franklin worked into the seventh inning, limiting York to three hits and a run over the first six. The former Revs lefty retired the first two batters easily before yielding a ground rule double to right center by John Pachot. After a quick discussion on the mound, the decision was made to leave Franklin (0-1) in the game. Chuck Jeroloman foiled the strategy, launching a two-run homer onto the picnic deck, putting York in the lead, 3-1.

The Barnstormers certainly had their chances in the final two innings. After Erold Andrus made a sliding catch of a Joe Gaetti pop fly to shallow right to start the eighth, Lloyd Turner and Michael Woods banged out consecutive singles. Adam Witter lifted a fly ball to center for the second out, but Aaron Herr drilled an RBI single into left, pulling Lancaster to within one. R.J. Rodriguez was summoned, and the York closer was able to retire Reggie Taylor on a fly ball to left to end the threat.

However, Lancaster would build another in the ninth. Ryan Mulhern beat out a single to the hole at shortstop as Jeroloman's long, hurried throw pulled Ian Bladergroen off the bag. Vic Gutierrez bunted back to the mound. Rodriguez picked up the ball and wheeled to make a throw to second for the force. With the tying run still at first base, Gutierrez was put into motion, and Octavio Martinez smacked a single into left center, giving Lancaster the tying run at third with one out.

Joe Gaetti was lifted in favor of switch hitting Bryant Nelson, who had been out since Monday with a strained back. The move did not work as Nelson struck out on three pitches. Lloyd Turner was hit by a pitch to load the bags, bringing up Michael Woods. Rodriguez fell behind Woods, 2-0, but came back to retire him on a routine fly ball to right to end the game. Rodriguez notched his fifth save.

The Barnstormers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Woods was hit by a pitch but was thrown out stealing as Witter swung and missed at a 3-1 offering. Witter walked, and Herr followed with a single to deep shortstop. Taylor also picked up a walk to load the bases, and the Barnstormers pushed one across on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Mulhern. Gutierrez flied to center to end the inning.

York drew even in the sixth on a one-out walk to Jeroloman, the first issued by Franklin on the night, and a double down the third base line by Scott Grimes. Franklin would eventually escape a bases loaded threat as James Shanks flied out to the right field corner.

Former Barnstormers left-hander Eric Ackerman retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth, getting Witter and Taylor on strikes, to pick up the win. Ackerman was released by the Barnstormers following Wednesday's game and picked up by the Revolution earlier on Friday.

Lancaster will host York again on Saturday evening. The Barnstormers will send Josh Hall (9-5) to the mound against Jarod Plummer (3-2). Fireworks will follow the game, and the Phillie Phanatic will be on hand as the ‘Stormers celebrate Philadelphia.
